Tune In While You Model: Podcasts Every Model Railroader Should Know
One of the great things about model railroading is that you can enjoy the hobby even when you’re not in the train room. Whether you’re commuting to work, traveling to a convention, walking the dog, or weathering a fleet of freight cars at the workbench, podcasts are a fantastic way to stay connected to the hobby.
This article focuses primarily on audio podcasts—shows you can enjoy while driving, exercising, working in the train room, or tackling other tasks around the house. Many of these podcasts are also available in video format, and there are countless outstanding video podcasts and channels on YouTube dedicated to model railroading. We’ll save those for a future article and take a closer look at some of the best video content the hobby has to offer.
The model railroad podcast community has grown tremendously over the past several years, offering everything from layout tours and operating discussions to interviews with hobby manufacturers and some of the most accomplished modelers in the hobby. If you’ve never listened to one before, now is a great time to give them a try.
Around the Layout Podcast (ATLP)
Hosted by Ray Arnott, Around the Layout Podcast has become one of the premier podcasts in model railroading. Each weekly episode features conversations with model railroaders from every corner of the hobby—from beginners building their first switching layout to nationally recognized master modelers. The relaxed interview style makes listeners feel like they’re sitting around the layout after an operating session, swapping stories with friends.
ATLP also features regular “What’s Happening in Model Railroading” episodes highlighting industry news, manufacturers, and upcoming events, along with an outstanding operations series hosted by Don Irace. The Crossing Gate
Produced by the Twin Cities Division of the NMRA, The Crossing Gate features thoughtful discussions on all aspects of model railroading. Don’t let the name fool you—Iron City Roundhouse Report is not just for N scalers. While the hosts are active in the N Scale community, the podcast covers the entire model railroading hobby. Episodes feature interviews with model railroaders, YouTube creators, railroad historians, manufacturers, and club members, with discussions ranging from operations and layout construction to electronics, scenery, prototype railroading, and hobby events.
The show’s greatest strength is its welcoming atmosphere and focus on the friendships that make model railroading such an enjoyable hobby. The Roundhouse
Hosted by Nick Ozorak, The Roundhouse bridges the gap between the prototype railroad industry and the modeling hobby. Episodes feature interviews with railroad historians, museum personnel, manufacturers, preservation groups, and model railroaders, giving listeners a broader appreciation of both real and model railroading.

A Modeler’s Life
Hosted by Lionel Strang, A Modeler’s Life has entertained model railroaders for many years with its casual, humorous approach. The show features interviews with hobbyists from around the world, mixed with plenty of laughs and stories that remind us that model railroading is as much about friendships as it is about trains.
It’s a fun listen that captures the spirit of the hobby and encourages everyone to simply enjoy building and operating their railroad.

From the Archives: Classic Podcasts Worth Revisiting
While the podcasts featured above continue to produce new episodes, several others may no longer be releasing new content but are still well worth your time. Their back catalogs contain hundreds of hours of interviews, techniques, and discussions that remain just as relevant today as when they were first recorded.
Hosted by Rob Freshour, Model Rail Radio was one of the pioneers of model railroad podcasting. For many years, Rob interviewed modelers from around the world, discussing everything from layout design and operations to scenery, scratchbuilding, and prototype inspiration. With hundreds of episodes available, there’s enough content to keep you busy for months.
Hosted by Eric Hansmann, Second Section Podcast focused on the intersection of prototype railroading and model railroading. Episodes explored how real railroad practices could inspire more realistic layouts and operations while also featuring conversations with respected historians and modelers.
As the name suggests, The Frugal Model Railroader demonstrated that enjoying the hobby doesn’t have to require a large budget. Episodes offered practical tips for saving money, building affordable layouts, and making the most of the materials you already have. Many of the ideas are just as useful today as when they were first released.
Produced in the United Kingdom, The Model Railway Show covered British modeling, exhibitions, manufacturers, and techniques.
