Division Layout – Scott Wooddell’s Deer Creek & Susquehanna Railroad

The Deer Creek & Susquehanna Railroad is an engaging and thoughtfully designed layout that captures the character of a hardworking Mid-Atlantic short line. It is based on a “what-if” concept—a railroad that was proposed to be built in Harford County, Maryland, in the late 19th century, but never came to fruition. In this imagined history, the line interchanges with the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad in Bel Air and extends toward the Susquehanna River, creating a believable and compelling prototype-inspired setting.

The railroad emphasizes realistic local operations, detailed scenery, and purposeful design. Towns along the line include Stafford, Darlington, Glanville, Thomas Run, Hickory, and Bel Air—each featuring several industry spurs that provide meaningful and varied switching work during operating sessions. Locations such as Stafford Yard further enhance both the operational flow and visual appeal of the layout.

Operations are the centerpiece of the Deer Creek & Susquehanna. Sessions revolve around local and job-based trains that serve on-line industries and keep traffic moving across the railroad. Interchange traffic plays an important role, with connections to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad represented through staging, adding variety and realism to freight movements. Crews work collaboratively in clearly defined roles, coordinating switching moves, yard work, and train movements to maintain an efficient flow of cars. This approach creates an engaging and highly interactive operating experience that mirrors the day-to-day work of a real short line railroad.

The layout environment further enhances the experience. A finished layout room with railroad-themed décor provides an immersive setting, while an adjacent crew lounge offers a comfortable space for operators to relax and socialize between assignments. With its strong focus on operations, attention to detail, and welcoming atmosphere, the Deer Creek & Susquehanna Railroad is an excellent example of how model railroading brings together craftsmanship, realism, and community.
