Chesapeake Division at the Great Scale Train Show

Events, Featured

The Chesapeake Division of the Mid-Eastern Region of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) was well represented at the Great Scale Train Show, held October 31–November 1, 2026, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. The popular show brought together model railroad enthusiasts, vendors, historical societies, scenic railways, modular railroad clubs, and hobbyists for a weekend celebrating model railroading.

Sharing the Hobby at the Division Table

The Chesapeake Division maintained an information table throughout the weekend, providing an opportunity to connect with fellow model railroaders and introduce visitors to the many benefits of NMRA membership. Division members were available to answer questions, share information about upcoming activities, and discuss the educational and social opportunities available through the organization.

Events like the Great Scale Train Show provide an excellent opportunity to reach model railroaders who may not be familiar with the NMRA or the Chesapeake Division. Whether visitors are experienced modelers or just getting started, the division offers opportunities to learn new skills, exchange ideas, visit layouts, and develop friendships with others who share an interest in the hobby.

Model Railroading in Action

One of the highlights of the division’s presence was its portable model railroad layout, which provided visitors with a chance to see model railroading in action. The layout served as both an attraction for show attendees and a conversation starter, allowing division members to discuss various aspects of the hobby, from trackwork and scenery to electrical systems and railroad operations.

The division’s layout was among many operating displays at the show, with numerous modular railroad clubs showcasing their layouts in a variety of scales. These displays demonstrated the creativity, craftsmanship, and teamwork involved in modular railroading. Visitors could enjoy watching trains operate through detailed scenes while talking with club members about their layouts and the benefits of participating in a model railroad club.

Portable and modular layouts are particularly valuable tools for promoting model railroading. They demonstrate that enjoying the hobby does not necessarily require a large basement or dedicated railroad room. Even a relatively small layout can provide opportunities for creativity, craftsmanship, and enjoyment.

Vendors, Historical Societies, Scenic Railways, and More

Of course, the Great Scale Train Show would not be complete without its many vendors offering a tremendous variety of model railroad merchandise. From locomotives and rolling stock to structures, scenery materials, electronics, tools, and railroad memorabilia, there was plenty to interest modelers of all scales and experience levels. Whether searching for a particular item or simply browsing for inspiration, attendees had numerous opportunities to discover something new for their modeling projects.

A particularly enjoyable feature of the show was the Craftsman Courtyard, an area dedicated to manufacturers and vendors specializing in craftsman kits and other products for modelers who enjoy building detailed, high-quality models. The Courtyard offered an opportunity to meet the people behind these products, examine their work up close, and discover unique kits that can add character and realism to a model railroad. Among the vendors was Chris Coarse of Conowingo Models, a fellow Chesapeake Division member. It is always great to see division members contributing to the hobby through their own businesses and sharing their craftsmanship with the broader modeling community.

Several railroad historical societies and scenic railways were also represented, offering visitors opportunities to connect with railroad history beyond the model railroad. Historical societies play an important role in preserving railroad heritage through photographs, publications, historical records, and research. For model railroaders interested in prototype accuracy, these organizations can be invaluable resources for learning about railroad equipment, structures, operations, and the communities served by the railroads. Scenic railways provide another way to experience that history firsthand, offering excursions aboard historic equipment and opportunities to see railroad preservation in action. Together, these organizations help connect our modeling interests with the fascinating history and continuing preservation of real railroads.

Together, the vendors, historical societies, scenic railways, and modular railroad clubs helped make the show much more than a shopping opportunity. It was also a place to learn, exchange ideas, and appreciate the many different aspects of the railroad hobby.

Building Connections and Growing the Hobby

While the trains and vendors are major attractions at the Great Scale Train Show, the opportunity to meet and interact with other model railroaders is equally important. Conversations at the division table help strengthen connections within the local modeling community and introduce potential new members to the NMRA.

The Chesapeake Division regularly organizes and participates in activities including layout tours, operating sessions, clinics, hands-on modeling events, and regional conventions. These activities provide opportunities for modelers of all skill levels and interests to become more involved in the hobby.

A special thank you goes to the Chesapeake Division members who volunteered their time to staff the information table, transport and operate the portable layout, and represent the division throughout the weekend. Their efforts help promote both the NMRA and the hobby of model railroading.
