Chesapeake Division Members Gather for a Modeler’s Day In

On Saturday, September 26, about 15 Chesapeake Division members gathered for a Modeler’s Day In, an opportunity to spend the day working on projects, sharing ideas, learning from one another, and enjoying the fellowship that makes the model railroad hobby so rewarding. The event was organized by Chesapeake Division Superintendent Kirk Bateman, with Clerk Tim Beaty arranging the use of a meeting room at a local church for the day’s activities.

Members brought along a variety of modeling projects to work on throughout the day. These included assembling a Proto 2000 tank car kit and a Funaro & Camerlengo covered hopper kit, as well as adding LED lighting to an N-scale structure. Having everyone working together provided plenty of opportunities to exchange techniques, ask questions, and see how other modelers approach their projects.

Several members also spent time updating and improving the Chesapeake Division modular railroad. Work included repairing some wiring and a latch, along with adding scenery to the right side of the module. Other members used the day to discuss layout designs, exchange ideas, and get advice on their own current or future layouts.

The event also provided an opportunity for members interested in the NMRA Achievement Program to receive guidance on preparing models for evaluation and working toward AP certificates. Experienced members were available to answer questions, discuss the evaluation process, and help modelers understand what is involved in having their work evaluated toward Achievement Program certificates.

Another highlight of the day was the Chesapeake Division Book Sale, coordinated by Kurt Thompson. With a large selection of railroad and model railroad books available, members had the chance to add some great titles to their personal libraries while helping raise funds for the Division.

Whether working on a modeling project, improving the modular railroad, discussing layout plans, exploring the Achievement Program, browsing the book sale, or simply talking trains, the Modeler’s Day In provided a great opportunity to share the hobby with fellow Division members.

The next opportunity for several Chesapeake Division members to get together will be at the Mid-Eastern Region Convention, October 15–18, 2026, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We look forward to seeing many of our fellow Chesapeake Division members there!
