Manufacturer Spotlight – Conowingo Models

Articles, Featured, Resources

One of the greatest strengths of the Chesapeake Division is the incredible talent found within our membership. Our members contribute to the hobby in countless ways—as layout builders, operators, historians, clinicians, photographers, authors, and manufacturers. Their creativity, craftsmanship, and willingness to share their knowledge help make model railroading more enjoyable for everyone.

One member making a significant contribution to the hobby is Chris Coarse, owner of Conowingo Models. Through his company, Chris designs and manufactures high-quality products that help model railroaders add realism, character, and operational interest to their layouts. His commitment to craftsmanship, attention to detail, and passion for the hobby have earned Conowingo Models a reputation as a respected manufacturer serving modelers across several scales.

If you’ll be attending the 2026 NMRA National Convention in Chattanooga, be sure to stop by the Conowingo Models booth during the National Train Show, taking place August 1–2. The National Train Show is one of the highlights of every NMRA National Convention, bringing together manufacturers, historical societies, clubs, dealers, and thousands of model railroad enthusiasts from across North America. It’s the perfect opportunity to see the latest products, learn new modeling techniques, and meet the people behind many of the companies that support our hobby.

Quality Products Across Multiple Scales

One of the things that sets Conowingo Models apart is the breadth of its product line. Chris produces an expanding selection of laser-cut structure kits and rolling stock kits for HO/HOn3, O/On3, and N scales, giving modelers in several popular scales the opportunity to add distinctive, highly detailed models to their layouts.

Whether you’re modeling a busy industrial district, a small-town main street, or a rural branch line, structures play an important role in telling the story of your railroad. Freight houses, industries, depots, warehouses, and commercial buildings aren’t just scenery—they create destinations for freight cars, establish a town’s identity, and give operators meaningful places to switch cars during an operating session.

Conowingo Models focuses on producing subjects that are both visually appealing and enjoyable to build. The precision of modern laser-cutting technology allows for crisp details, realistic textures, and excellent fit, while still giving modelers the freedom to personalize each kit through painting, weathering, lighting, signage, and additional detailing. No two completed models are exactly alike.

In addition to structures and rolling stock, Conowingo Models also offers several unique HO scale doodlebug bodies that are designed to fit commercially available mechanisms. These models provide hobbyists with the opportunity to build motive power that isn’t commonly available as ready-to-run equipment, making them especially attractive to prototype modelers and those who enjoy customizing their locomotive fleets.

Conowingo Models is also a source for quality scenery products, carrying materials from manufacturers such as Moose Creek Trees. From realistic trees and foliage to laser-cut structures, freight cars, and locomotive projects, Chris offers products that help modelers create complete, believable scenes. Whether you’re beginning a new layout or adding the finishing touches to a favorite scene, you’ll find products that can help bring your railroad to life.

Built by a Modeler, for Modelers

One of the reasons Conowingo Models has developed such a loyal following is that Chris understands the hobby from the perspective of a model railroader. His products reflect the practical experience that comes from designing, building, and operating model railroads. Every kit is designed not only to look great when completed but also to provide an enjoyable and rewarding building experience.

Chris is well known for taking the time to answer questions, discuss construction techniques, and share ideas with fellow hobbyists at train shows. Whether you’re an experienced craftsman or building your very first laser-cut kit, you’ll find him eager to help and willing to share tips that can improve your modeling skills.

His contributions to the hobby extend well beyond Conowingo Models. Chris has presented clinics at local, regional, and national NMRA conventions, sharing his modeling techniques, research, and craftsmanship with fellow hobbyists. Like many of the best clinicians, he enjoys helping others develop new skills and discover techniques they can apply to their own layouts. His willingness to educate and encourage fellow model railroaders reflects the spirit of the NMRA and the collaborative nature of the hobby.

Many modelers discover that building laser-cut kits is one of the most rewarding parts of model railroading. Unlike ready-to-place models, craftsman kits allow builders to create something truly unique. Through weathering, custom paint schemes, lighting, and scenic integration, each completed model becomes a reflection of the builder’s creativity.

A New Website and NMRA Partnership Benefits

Conowingo Models has recently launched a new website, making it easier than ever for model railroaders to browse the company’s growing product line, learn about new releases, and order products directly online. The updated site showcases the variety of kits and products available while providing customers with a convenient way to stay up to date on the latest offerings.

Chris is also a proud participant in the NMRA Partnership Program, one of the many valuable benefits of NMRA membership. Through the Partnership Program, NMRA members receive exclusive discounts from participating manufacturers and retailers, including Conowingo Models. It’s a great example of how supporting fellow NMRA members benefits everyone involved—the manufacturer gains exposure within the hobby, while members enjoy savings on quality products for their layouts.

Visit Conowingo Models This Summer and Fall

If you’re traveling to Chattanooga for the NMRA National Convention, make plans to spend some time exploring the National Train Show and be sure to visit the Conowingo Models booth. It’s an excellent opportunity to see Chris’s latest products firsthand, ask questions about his kits, and discover ideas for your next modeling project.

If you can’t make it to Chattanooga, you’ll have another opportunity closer to home. Chris will also be exhibiting in the Craftsman Courtyard at the Great Scale Train Show in Timonium, Maryland, on October 31–November 1. The Craftsman Courtyard has become one of the most popular destinations at the show, bringing together talented artisans, small manufacturers, and specialty vendors whose products often can’t be found in traditional hobby shops. It’s the perfect place to meet the people behind the products, learn new techniques, and discover unique additions for your railroad.
